The University of Utah signed three recruits to compete in 2003. Men's Tennis signed Tomasz Grzyb, Nick Coutts and Tyrone Hill.
After a successful 2002 regular season and the future loss of senior David Mercier, Nik Yip and Corrie Scheepers, the Utes had some big gaps to fill. "Signing these three student athletes made it a very successful recruiting year for us," says Head Coach F.D. Robbins. "They are top caliber athletes and ranked very high coming in. They will contribute immediately to our program. I am looking for good things from them."
Grzyb, from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, signed in the spring. Winner of the under-14 Canadian Indoor Nationals in singles and doubles, Grzyb represented Canada at the under-14 World Team Tennis in Mexico. Grzyb finished 2000 ranked second in the under-16 Canadian rankings and finished 2001 ranked four in the under-18 Canadian Rankings. He represented Canada at the Sunshine Cup in Florida, and finished second in singles and fifth in doubles at the Winter and Summer Canadian Nationals.
Coutts, from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, is ranked eighth in singles and sixth in doubles for the under 18 category. Coutts is also ranked first in British Columbia for under-18 singles. He was ranked 59th in Canada in the men's open and was one of five players chosen by Tennis Canada to play in last summer's Futures Tour in Ontario and Quebec. Coutts also was an all star for boys volleyball and ranked in the top 10 in British Columbia for Badminton.
Hill, from Johannesburg, South Africa, has been playing tennis since the age of four. At age 14, he was nationally ranked sixth in singles and tenth in doubles in South Africa. He attended the Nick Bollietary Tennis Academy in America and was invited to Australia where he was chosen for under-15 International Province Team. Hill was also chosen for the Nike Junior Masters.
At age 15, he was nationally ranked fourth in singles and third in doubles. At age 16, Hill was ranked second in singles and fifth in doubles and was nominated by S.A.T.A. to participate in the Junior I.T.F. series in Africa. Hill played Masters in La Baula, France. At age 17, he was ranked No.15 in singles and No. 8 in doubles. Hill signed with Utah this past fall.
