BOISE, Idaho - The University of Utah's women's tennis team suffers yet another tough defeat against a powerhouse opponent. The Broncos of Boise State dowsed the Utes, 6-1. This is the twelfth nationally ranked team Utah has faced this season. With this defeat the women netter's record falls to 9-13 on the season.
In singles action, senior Irini Kotoglou pulled out an amazing win over Erin Polowski, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. Kotoglou was the only Utes to finish on top in singles competition. Freshman Ellen Svensson was defeated by Renate Stoop at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-1. Sheri Esrock was beat out by Helen Lawson, 6-2, 6-4 and Linn Ronnberg was etched by Jemima Hayward, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Ronnberg and Esrock took care of Alissa Ayling and Anna Curlolo in the Utes only doubles victory, 9-7. Kotoglou and Hansen were knocked out by Lawson and Stoop, 8-3 and Kasteler and Svensson were notched by Polowski and Hayward, 8-2.
This defeat concludes the Utes 2001-2002 regular season. Coming up, Utah will be traveling to Provo, Utah to compete in the Mountain West Conference tournament. With the fifth seeding in the MWC the Utes will take on fourth seeded and No. 43 ranked BYU. The Utes were defeated by the (9-12, 4-3 MWC) Cougars earlier this season, 5-2. The match time is still TBA.
