SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team was edged out by top-seeded SMU, 4-3. The Utes battled hard, but just didn't have enough to upset the top-ranked mustangs. This tough lose puts Utah at 6-6 on the season.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg lost a decisive set to Kit Carson, which decided the match. Ronnberg was defeated by Carson, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6. Utah's Irini Kotoglou triumphed over Jenny Langer, 6-3, 7-6. Sheri Esrock etched out Allison Leuszler in a dueling match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and freshman Ellen Svensson defeated Siayareh Rambally, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, Ronnberg and Esrock ousted Lynsie Jones and Sara Cortas, 8-4. Kotoglou and Svensson were overcome by Carson and Langer, 8-5 and Kasteler and Hansen were barely defeated by Leuszler and Rambally, 9-8.
Coming up, the Utes will compete against Rice and top-seeded TCU. The 6-9 Rice Owls were ranked No. 75 in the ITA polls, but dropped out of last weeks ranking. TCU is ranked No. 31 in the polls and have acquired a 9-3 overall record. The Rice match will be played Friday, Mar. 15 at 6:00 p.m. and the TCU bout will begin Sunday, Mar. 17 at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
