Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 67-59 on Thurs., Feb. 14 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah improves to 12-10 overall, 5-5 in MWC play. The Lobos drop to 18-6 overall, 7-3 in the MWC.
The Utes and the Lobos went into the break tied at 30-30. Utah shot 11-of-26 from the field and 9-of-21 from behind the arc, while the Lobos went 10-of-25 from the field and 9-of-29 from behind the arc in the first half.
On the night, Utah had four players score in double figures. Senior Lindsay Herbert led all scorers with 23 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Teammates Erin Gibbons and Kelsy Stireman tallied 11 points each, while Lauren Beckman chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Utes went 20-of-51 from the field, 8-of-21 from three-point range and 19-of-20 from the free-throw line.
The Lobos had three players score in double-figures. Jordan Adams led the team with 11 points and five boards, while Mandi Moore and Melissa Forest tallied 10 points each. New Mexico shot 35 percent (19-of-54) from the field, 18 percent (2-of-11) from the behind the arc and 83 percent (19-of-23) from the free-throw line.
"Herbie (Lindsay Herbert) gave us a huge lift tonight," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "She is in a more comfortable place right now with her shooting and can get it done for us. I am very pleased with our overall play tonight. We are trying to keep it together and keep moving forward."
UP NEXT: The Utes host the Air Force Falcons on Sat., Feb. 16 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. On Sat., Feb. 23, Utah will face Brigham Young in Provo, Utah at 4:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the San Diego State Aztecs on Thurs., Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in San Diego, Calif. On Sat., Mar. 2, Utah will play UNLV at 5:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes will participate in the MWC Tournament on Mar. 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nev.
