SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of Utah's women's tennis team etches out San Francisco, 6-1 to improve their overall record to 4-2 on the season. The Utes excelled in both singles and doubles. This was the Utes first victory on their four game road trip.
In singles action, senior Irini Kotoglou was defeated by Gabi Ruiz in a grueling match, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5. In the second spot, Utah's Linn Ronnberg ousted Carloine Tweeton, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Sheri Esrock beat out Carey Savage, 4-6, 7-6,4-6. Freshman Ellen Svensson defeated Anna Skogerboe, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Cassie Kasteler overcame Michelle Duncan, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7. Allison Hansen knocked off Nikki Kobayashi, 6-4, 6-2 and freshman Hilary Doyle defeated Alyssa Samuel, 8-6.
In doubles action, the Kotoglou and Esrock tandem were defeated by Ruiz and Skogerboe, 8-5. Kasteler and Svenssen ousted Savage and Tweeton, 8-4 and Ronnberg and Hansen defeated Duncan and Kobayashi, 8-4.
Next up for the Utes is St. Mary's. This match will be played in Moraga, Calif., on Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m. "This was a very tough win for us," says head coach John Tsumas. "San Francisco is a very impressive team and I hope we can continue winning on the road."
