PROVO, Utah - In the first day of competition at the BYU Men's Tennis Invitational, Tyler Poulson moved past two foes to enter quarterfinals play on Friday afternoon. In the first round of the open draw tournament, Poulson, as thr 13 seed, moved past Jeremy Price of Brigham Young (6-2,6-3) in the morning matchup. In the afternoon match, Poulson met Anton Rudjuk, the sixten seed out of BYU. Poulson shot out of the gate in the first set, winning 6-2. He dropped the second set 2-6, then came back in the third to gain the victory 6-4. Poulson will face fourth seed Mattias Silva of Boise State Firday at 11:00 a.m. Silva had earlier defeated Utah's Daniel Lohff in the round of 16 (5-7, 6-1, 6-4).The winner of Friday's match will move on to semifinals play to be held on Saturday.
In other first round action, freshman Nic Coutts lost a close three set match to Utah State's Jonah Nelson. Coutts captured the first set 6-4, then played a close 6-7 (5) set tiebreaker in the second set. The third set also saw a 6-7 tiebreaker, with Nelson coming out the victor. Coutts went on to defeat Paul Heapy of BYU 6-4, 7-5 in the consloation round. He meets Jason Herrud in the consolation quarterfinals Friday morning. Doubles play will also begin on Friday.
