LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- - Having been eliminated from the main draw in the Omni Hotels Regional Tournament, the University of Utah men's tennis team continued play in the consolation round. In Thursday's first round of the consolation round, Tyler Poulson defeated Northern Arizona's James Heck 6-1, 6-2. In the second round of the draw, Poulson advanced past Nick Ames of New Mexico after Ames withdrew from the match. Also in the second round, Daniel Lohff advanced past Jasmin Hotzic 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
In Thursday's consolation doubles, two Ute tandems moved on, with Kaisorn Chaichana teaming with Lohff to defeat the Idaho duo of Christopher Faulman and Hector Mucharraz 8-3. Roeland Brateanu and Tomasz Gryzb moved past Boise State's Mahmoud Rezk and Beck Roghaer on a withdrawal.
Friday's play saw further Ute action, as Daniel Lohff played twice. His first match was a win over Weber State's Don Williams, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Lohff then faced no. 3 seed Marcus Bernston of Boise State, and fell 4-6, 2-6. Roeland Brateanu also met two foes in singles action, with wins over Air Forces Chris Dong and no. 10 seed Thomas Schoek of Boise State, 6-0, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Tomasz Grzyb fell to Justin Mancinelli of Air Force, 6-3, 4-6,0-6. Kaisorn Chaichana fell to BYU's Anton Rudjuk, 4-6, 1-6. Nick Coutts withdrew from his match with New Mexico State's Luis Avila.
In Friday's consolation doubles, Nick Coutts and Tyler Poulson stormed past Northern Arizona's Jeremy Coll and Thibault Schram, 8-1. Brateanu and Grzyb advanced off another withdrawal, this time over New Mexico State's Ben Archer-Clowes and Danilo Zivnovic. Chaichana and Lohff teamed up to face BYU's Jose Lechuga and Anton Rudjuk, but fell 6-8.
