LAS VEGAS, Nev-- - The University of Utah Men's tennis team travelled to the University of Nevada in Las Vegas for the Omni Hotels Region VII Intercollegiate Tournament. The tournament is made up of teams from the Mountain West Conference and from the intermountain west. Freshman Nick Coutts upset 16-seed Avi Salamon of UNLV 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an afternoon contest. He meets Idaho State's Hestian Stoica on Thursday morning.
Roeland Brateanu moved past Montana State's Chigateri Tejeshwara 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. He will meet San Diego State's Daniel Jung in the Round of 32. Toamsz Grzyb defeated two foes to advance, first over Mahmoud Rezk of Boise State, 7-6, 7-6; then defeated Bradedn Olson of Montana State 6-4, 6-4. Kaisorn Chaichana overcame Jake Berriochoa of Montan State 6-3, 6-3.
Daniel Lohff defeated BYU's Jose Lechuga 6-5, 6-1, then fell to ninth-seeded Valintino Pest of San Diego State 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. Tyler Poulson fell to New Mexico State's Danilo Zivnovic 6-7, 6-7.
Kaisorn Chaichana and Daniel Lohff were the only Utes doubles team to play on the first day of competition, falling to Ryan O'Neill and Ian Steenckamp of Montana 4-8. The two other Ute doubles duos will play Thursday morning.
