The University of Utah cross country teams head to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete in the Pre-National meet on Sat, Oct. 19. This will be the final NCAA qualifying meet for the Utes in 2002. The meet will feature 91 men's teams and 98 women's teams from around the country.
QUOTING HEAD COACH BRIAN APPELL:
"The teams have chance to earn valuable points towards qualifying for the nationals," states Appell. "If the group can keep together among the 250 plus athletes and run their normal pace, they should place ahead of many currently ranked teams."
LAST MEET:
The University of Utah cross country teams competed in the Roy Griak Invitational on Sat., Sept. 28. This race was the first NCAA qualifying race for the Utes and featured 30 of the top schools in the country. The men's team, running an 8,000 meters, finished 17th out of 27 (403 points), while the women finished 15th out of 22 (394 points), running a 6,000 meters race.
Junior Delfino Arevalo led the men's team placing 43rd (25:04.10). Following Arevalo were freshman Kurt Michaels at 60th (25:17.7), senior Lion Gallegos at 97th (25:34.30) and junior Nephi Tyler at 101st (25:35.70).
On the women's side, junior Tara Hall led the way placing 50th (22:20.90), followed by sophomore Charity Vernon at 68th (22:36.70), freshman Stacie Grover at 79th (22:55.10) and sophomore Jenny Brusch at 91st (23:09.80).
UTES ON THE MOVE:
At the Montana State Invitational, only 14 seconds split the top five qualifiers for the men's team. In the first meet, there was a 35 second split and a 22 second split in second meet. "If the Utes can implement this style at the Pre-National meet, they should perform well," says Appell.
NEXT MEET:
Next on the schedule for Utes is the Mountain West Conference Championships. Competition will take place at the East Bay Golf Course in Provo, Utah, on Fri., Nov. 1.
