SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 win over Utah State in the 2001-02 season opener. Utah starts off the season 1-0 and are confident about the upcoming season.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg defeated Utah State's Joccee Bergeson, 6-3, 6-1. Utah's Irini Kotoglou defeated Caroline Pollock, 6-3, 6-1. Sheri Esrock also came out with a victory against Richelle Ferguson, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Allison Hansen finished strong with a victory over Haley Hawkins, 6-4, 6-3.
In double action, the Utes were unstoppable. Ronnberg and Esrock defeated Jocee Bergeson and Richelle Ferguson, 8-2. The Cassie Kasteler and Ellen Svensson duo took on Holly Anderson and Amy Thatcher. Kasteler and Svensson swept by with a 8-6 victory. Utah's Kotoglou and Hansen defeated Sarah Lowe and Pollock, 8-4.
The Utes will continue competition Sunday, Jan. 20 at 1:00 p.m. This dual match with Air Force will be Utah's first MWC match of the season and it will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
