SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Brigham Young University claimed the 2001 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships at the Snowbird Canyon Racquet Club, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday with a 4-0 win over UNLV. The championship match was held at 2:00 p.m. between the No. 3-seeded Rebel and the No. 4 Cougars.
BYU jumped off to a quick start by winning the doubles point, 2-1. The Cougar's No. 34-ranked tandem of Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano were victorious over Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin at the No. 1 position, 8-4. Jeff Olsen and Jeff Harbach sealed the point by beating Thomas Schneiter and Danny Erez at the No. 2 spot, 8-3. UNLV's Leslie Eisinga and Artin Tafazoli earned the Rebel's sole doubles victory at the No. 3 spot over Eric Nyman and Matt Stohl, 8-2.
Michael Gysens wasted little time in earning BYU's first singles win at the No. 5 spot over Artin Tafazoli of UNLV, 6-2, 6-2. Carlos Lozano followed suit, and won at the No. 2 position for the Cougars in straight sets over Thomas Schneiter, 6-3, 7-5. Eric Nyman was stormed by a pack of Cougars after his win at the No. 3 spot secured the victory for BYU. Nyman defeated UNLV's Danny Erez, 6-4, 6-4. At the concluding ceremonies, Nyman was named MWC Freshman of the Year, while Cougar coach Jim Osborne was named Coach of the Year.
In the third place match at 10:00 a.m., No. 2 seed New Mexico prevailed over No. 1 seed San Diego State, 4-2. The Lobos were victorious at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the doubles point. Brent Salazar and Andrew Irving of New Mexico defeated Travis Hasson and Matt Bere at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Kyle Russell and Diego Garza won to earn the doubles point for New Mexico over Mike Coehlo and Khalid Naffa of San Diego State.
New Mexico's Takeshi Itoh knocked off nationally No. 22-ranked Oliver Miaberger of San Diego State, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot in singles. Michael Polasek earned the Lobo victory at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), over SDSU's Valentino Pest. New Mexico sealed the victory with Andrew Irving's 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Aztec's Travis Hasson at the No. 5 spot. In the effort, San Diego won at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions. Adam Webster defeated New Mexico's Bart Scott at the No. 3 spot and Matt Bere won at the No. 6 over John Kowalski of New Mexico. The No. 4 match was not finished.
The defending conference champions, New Mexico, placed third overall in this year's competition, while San Diego State finished fourth. Utah was victorious over Air Force on Friday to claim fifth place, while the Falcons rounded off sixth.
