SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Day two of the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships kicked off at the Snowbird Canyon Racquet Club, in Salt Lake City, Utah with a 9:00 a.m match between No. 2 seed New Mexico and No. 3 seed UNLV. Despite an ankle injury to No. 74 ranked Nenad Zivkovich of UNLV, the Rebels took a 4-2 win over the defending Mountain West Conference champion, New Mexico.
In doubles, the two teams split matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. New Mexico's Takeshi Itoh and Bart Scott defeated Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin of UNLV at the No. 1 doubles position, 8-3. UNLV won at the No. 3 spot as Leslie Eisinga and Artin Tafazoli defeated Kyle Russell and Diego Garza of New Mexico. The doubles point awaited the winner of the No. 2 position between Thomas Schneiter and Danny Erez of UNLV and Brent Salazar and Andrew Irving of New Mexico. The Lobos battled from two games down to force a tie breaker. UNLV took control of the tie breaker (7-2) to win the match, 9-8 and earn the doubles point.
Zivkovic retired in the second set to give New Mexico's Takeshi Itoh the win at the No. 1 position (6-3, 2-0 ret.). UNLV's Thomas Shneiter was victorious at the No. 2 position over Michael Polasek of New Mexico. The Rebels also won at the No. 3 spot, with Danny Erez defeating New Mexico's Bart Scott, 6-1, 6-3. Gregor Skorin sealed the victory for the Rebels by defeating Diego Garza of New Mexico, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. John Kowalski's won at the No. 6 spot for the Lobos over UNLV's Leslie Eisinga, while the No. 5 match did not finish.
The Rebels awaited the 1:00 p.m. match between No. 1 San Diego State and No. 4 BYU. The winner would move on to face UNLV in the finals on Saturday, while the loser would face New Mexico for third place.
BYU jumped off to the early lead by winning the doubles point. Jeff Olsen and Jeff Harbach of BYU defeated San Diego's Travis Hasson and Matt Bere at the No. 2 position, 8-3. The Cougar's tandem of Eric Nyman and Matt Stohl were victorious at the No. 3 position over Valentino Pest and Khalid Naffa, 8-3, to seal the point. The No. 1 match was not finished.
BYU continued rolled the momentum into the singles matches, where the Cougars came away with three wins to secure the match. BYU's Gert Vilms knocked off No. 22-ranked Oliver Maiberger, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), at the No. 1 spot. Carlos Lozano won for the Cougars at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-4, over San Diego State's Valentino Pest. Michael Gysens tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win for BYU over Travis Hasson at the No. 5 position. The Aztecs earned one victory at the No. 3 spot, as Adam Webster defeated Eric Nyman, 6-2, 6-4.
Day two's upsets lead to Saturday's championship match to be held at 2:00 p.m between No. 3 seed UNLV and No. 4 seed BYU. The third place match between No. 1 San Diego State and No. 2 New Mexico will kick off Saturday's action at 10:00 a.m.
Friday's final match between No. 5 seed Utah and No. 6 seed Air Force held the stakes for fifth place in the tournament. After winning the doubles point, Utah won three singles matches to seal a 4-1 victory over the Falcons.
Utah earned the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Utah's Daniel Carlsson and Tyler Poulson breezed past Eric Pittman and Justin Mancinelli of Air Force to a 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Kaisorn Chaichana and Corrie Scheepers earned a 8-6 win for the Utes at the No. 3 slot over Air Force's Kyle Rainey and Rene Ramirez. The No. 1 match was not finished.
Utah played strong at the bottom of the lineup in singles, winning at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Air Force's Kyle Rainey came away with the Falcon's sole victory with a win over Kevin Zenger at the No. 2 spot. Daniel Carlsson of Utah defeated Chris Zielinski of Air Force at the No. 4 position. At No. 5, it was Utah's Tyler Poulson who earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Justin Mancinelli. Filling in for an injured Nicholas Yip, Kaisorn Chaichana was victorious for the Utes at the No. 6 position over Doug Fike.
The win gave Utah a fifth-place finish, while Air Force finished sixth. The tournament will wrap up Saturday, Apr. 28 with the championship matches. New Mexico and San Diego State will square off at 10:00 a.m for third place, while the championship match will feature UNLV and BYU at 2:00 p.m.
