SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Day one of the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships kicked off with No. 3 seed UNLV sweeping the No. 6 seed Air Force, 4-0, in a 10:00 a.m. match-up at the Snowbird Canyon Racquet Club, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In the doubles matches, UNLV claimed the point with a pair of wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Nenad Zivkovik and Gregor Skorin of UNLV defeated Chris Zielinski and Greg Zielinski of Air Force, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot. The No. 3 doubles team of Leslie Eisinga and Artin Tafazoli (UNLV) claimed an 8-5 victory over the No. 3 team of Kyle Rainey and Rene Ramirez (Air Force), to secure the point for the Rebels. The No. 2 doubles match did not finish as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches were won by UNLV.
In the singles action, UNLV won the first three matches to claim the points and the win. In the No. 2 position, Thomas Schneiter (UNLV) defeated No. 2 Kyle Rainey (Air Force) (6-3, 6-1). Danny Erez (UNLV) shut-down Rene Ramirez (Air Force), 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 slot, and teammate Leslie Eisinga (UNLV) wrapped up singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Doug Fike (Air Force) at the No. 6 position. The No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches did not finish as the Rebels of UNLV move into the semifinals. UNLV will face the No. 2 seed New Mexico at 9:00 a.m. on Fri., Apr. 27. Air Force moves into the consolation bracket and will face Utah at 5:00 p.m. on Fri., Apr. 27.
Thursday's afternoon match featured No. 4 seed BYU against No. 5 Utah. The down-to-the-wire match ended with a tie-breaker, as BYU came out on top to win, 4-3.
BYU jumped out to an early advantage by winning the doubles point, 2-1. Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano edged out Utah's Nicholas Yip and David Mercier, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot. Utah was victorious at the No. 2 spot, with Daniel Carlsson and Tyler Poulson defeating BYU's Jeff Harbach and Jeff Olsen, 8-5. The Cougars sealed the point with Eric Nyman and Matt Stohl's 8-5 win over Corrie Scheepers and Kevin Zenger of Utah at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Utah battled back to win three matches in straight sets. Gert Vilms of BYU held off Utah's David Mercier at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-3. The Cougars also won at the No. 2 spot where Carlos Lozano defeated Kevin Zenger of Utah, 6-3, 7-6. Utah came away with the victory at the No. 3 spot, where Corrie Scheepers defeated BYU's Eric Nyman, 6-3, 6-3. Utah's Daniel Carlsson knocked off Jeff Harbach of BYU at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-3, and Tyler Poulson earned the Utes' third singles victory over Matt Stohl at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 7-5.
The match came down to a tough battle at the No. 4 spot, where BYU's Michael Gysens faced off against Utah's Nicholas Yip. Yip took control of the first set to breeze to an early lead, but Gysens fought back to send the match to a third set. The two netters exchanged games until the set was sent to a tie-breaker. Yip began to suffer leg cramps, which caused a slight delay in the match, but he continued to play in pain. Gysens was able to take advantage and rolled on to win the match, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6.
The Cougars advance to play No. 1 seed San Diego State at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 27. Utah and Air Force will square off on Friday at 5:00 p.m. for the fifth place match.
