ALBUQUERQUE - The University of Utah women's tennis team (4-7, 2-0 MWC) edged out a dogfight to win against Air Force (10-7), 4-3, in Albuquerque.
After earning the doubles point, Utah survived two matches at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, where Air Force had a combined four match points in which the Utes overcame.
Irini Kotoglou grinded out a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 over Kristel Chuntraruk. Kotoglou was down 5-4 in the third set. At No. 5, Heidi Thomas held off three second-set match points by Gina Black and pulled out a 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win. Frida Kareld beat Ashley Gee at No. 6, 6-7, 6-0, retired.
Kotoglou and Brooke Wilkinson led off at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory over Chuntraruk and Black, while Cassie Kasteler and Linn Ronnberg defeated Heather Shelby and Gee, 8-2 at No. 3.
"It was a real battle to win today," said Coach John Tsumas. "Heidi came back from down 6-1, 5-3 and had three match points against her to win. Irini was down 5-4 in the third and also had a match point against her. It was a hard fought match all the way. Irini and Brooke clinched the doubles victory."
