The University of Utah women's tennis team (3-7, 1-0 MWC) resumes Mountain West Conference action Fri., March 23 against Air Force (10-6) at 10 a.m. in Albuquerque, NM. The Utes also play host New Mexico, Sat., March 24 at 5 p.m.
About the Utes:
Utah crushed instate rival Utah State, 7-0, and won its second straight match.
Utah opened the match earning the doubles point by winning 2 of 3 match-ups. Cassie Kasteler and Brooke Wilkinson beat out Jocee Mason and Richelle Ferguson at No. 2, 8-2. Utah clinched the point after Linn Ronnberg and Sheri Esrock defeated Tracy Bertagua and Johanna Johnson at No. 3, 8-3.
In singles play, Utah dominated the competition leaving Utah State scoreless. Cassie Kasteler started Utah off by defeating Sarah Lowe in three-sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2. At No. 2, Linn Ronnberg defeated Jocee Mason, 6-3, 6-4. Sheri Esrock continued Utah's dominance downing Richelle Ferguson in three-sets in the closest match of the night, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Heidi Thomas followed suit defeating Tracy Bertagua in two-sets, 6-4, 6-1. Brooke Wilkinson kept it going for Utah defeating Johanna Johnson at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2. Frida Kareld finished it up for Utah downing Amelia Martinez, 6-0, 6-0.
About the Falcons:
Air Force, 10-6, dropped a 5-2 match to Weber State. The two Falcons wins were earned by Kristel Chuntraruk at No. 2 and Gina Black at No. 5 singles.
About The Lobos:
No. 42 New Mexico lost 4-3 to in-state rival New Mexico State on March 10. The Lobos season mark fell to 7-5. New Mexico is led by No. 1 singles Natalia Alekhova who has been ranked in the top-100 previously. The Lobos play a three-match homestand this weekend, starting with BYU Fri., Utah as the sandwich team, and ending with Air Force.
