LONG ISLAND, NY- Utah swimmer Heidi Hausknecht finished 47th in the 100-yard freestyle (:51.38) on the final day of the 2001 Women's NCAA Championships. Hausknecht was invited to participate in this year's competition in three events and was the only swimmer to represent Utah. Earlier in the meet, Hausknecht finished 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle (:23.14) and 28th in the 100-yard butterfly (:55.65).
"Being invited back in three events was awesome. It was very exciting to be able to participate in each day of the competition. The NCAA meet in the fastest in the world, to be among the best of the best was truly exciting," states Hausknecht.
Hausknecht has made a name for herself at Utah, becoming the first female swimmer honored as an All-American during the 1998-99 season. She currently holds three individual school records and is a member on four record-setting relay teams. Hausknecht was able to return from a back injury that had given her problems during the 1999-2000 season, to defend her titles as the Mountain West Conference Champion in the 50 free and 100 fly for the second year. Hausknecht served as one of this year's team captains, helping the team adjust and accept what she refers to as a positive change in Utah swimming traditions.
