SEATTLE - The University of Utah women's tennis team (1-7) couldn't produce at the top of the lineup, as they dropped a 5-2 match to No. 17 Washington.
Utah had big wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. Heidi Thomas earned a win after she won the second set and Colleen Gray was forced to retire in the third. At No. 6, Frida Kareld grinded out a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Kathy Chi. Thomas and Kareld also combined at No. 2 doubles for the other Ute win, defeating Boisclair/Gray, 9-8(5). The tandem is trying to help Utah end a six-match losing skid.
The Utes face No. 58 UC-Irvine tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Seattle.
