SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Lance Rice threw for 238 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, including two to Josh Lyman, as Utah beat South Florida 52-21 on Saturday night.
Rice, a sophomore who had thrown for only two touchdowns passes all season, completed 16 of 21 passes in three quarters of play. Adam Tate added 122 yards rushing on 15 carries as Utah (4-1) won its third game in a row.
Tate scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns - a 62-yard reception and a 1-yard plunge after he scampered for 63 yards. Safety Dave Revill lifted Utah to a 52-7 lead on a 47-yard interception return for a score with 13:31 remaining.
The Utes had no trouble moving the ball against the Bulls (2-3) with 509 yards total offense (481 in the first three quarters) but couldn't keep themselves out of trouble with 13 penalties for 158 yards.
Utah's 52 points are the most ever against USF, an independent playing its first season in NCAA Division I-A.
South Florida, aided by 68 yards of penalties against Utah on the drive, finally scored on an 8-yard pass from Blackwell to Brian Fisher with 2:49 left in the third period to make it 38-7 for Utah. A personal foul negated an interception by Antwoine Sanders the play before the score.
With Utah dominating the game, action after the plays turned nasty. In the third quarter alone, officials called 135 yards of penalties, including seven personal fouls. Overall, the teams combined for 23 penalties worth 235 yards.
The blowout could have been worse. South Florida stopped a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 at the USF 9 in the third quarter. Utah played mostly reserves for the entire fourth quarter and the Bulls backup QB Ronnie Banks threw a 7-yard TD pass to Jason Bingham with 8 seconds left.
Utah's 21 points and 191 yards are the most ever given up by a South Florida team in the first quarter. This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams, who will play again in Tampa next fall.
