SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team struggled in singles matches in the second day of the Utah Invitational. Sheri Esrock is the only Ute that remains undefeated. Esrock moved into the semifinals by defeating Utah's own Ellen Svensson, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Utah senior Linn Ronnberg was defeated by first-seeded Therina StennKamp from Weber State, 6-1, 6-2. Third-seeded Cassie Kasteler was defeated by Utah State's Caroline Pollock in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Utah's Hilary Doyle was defeated by Utah State's Amelia Martinez in the consolation bracket, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play fourth-seeded Kasteler and Svensson prevailed over Haley Hawkins and Carolyn Larsen from Utah State, 8-5. Anderson and Doyle were defeated by first-seeded SteenKamp and Dana Delancey, 8-2. Alison Hansen and Esrock fell to Sarah Lowe and Pollock, 8-6. Ronnberg and Irini Kotoglou defeated Kelly Patterson and Crystal Holt from Southern Utah, 8-0.
Third round competition will resume on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center. The consolation bracket is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. as well.
