SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team showed an impressive performance in the first day of the Utah Invitational. Four of the six Utah tennis players remain undefeated in the competition.
Utah senior Linn Ronnberg defeated Utah State's Amelia Martinez and Jenn Larkin from Southern Utah in straight sets. After a first round bye, third-seeded Cassie Kasteler defeated Haley Hawkins from Utah State, 6-0, 6-0.
Seventh-seeded Sheri Esrock defeated Holly Anderson from USU, 6-0, 6-3 and Richelle Ferguson, 6-3, 6-0. Utah's Ellen Svensson, seeded second, defeated USU's Tracy Bertagna, 6-1, 6-3 after a first round bye.
After defeating Ashlee Gardner from SUU, Utah's Alison Hansen fell to USU's Sarah Lowe, 6-4, 6-4. Hilary Doyle lost her first round to Jocee Mason of USU, 7-6, 6-0 and will play in Friday's consolation bracket.
In doubles play Kasteler and Svensson defeated Bertagna and Martinez, 8-2. Anderson and Doyle defeated Ferguson and Mason, 8-4. Hanson and Esrock defeated Chelsee Drews and Tara Rosenweig of Weber State, 8-6. Ronnberg and Irini Kotoglou advanced to the second round with a bye.
Second round competition will resume on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
