TULSA, Okla. - The first day of singles competition opened up for the Utes today, Oct 25, at the Central Region Championships. Utah made a good effort, but had a tough time fending off some of the top competition in the country. Utah's Cassie Kasteler fell to Anda Perianu from Oklahoma in two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Irini Kotoglou was defeated by No. 4 ranked Aleksandra Durska from Tulsa, 6-3, 6-2, and Sheri Esrock lost to New Mexico State's Elke Blodau, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Kasteler and Ellen Svensson were victorious against Montana's Sarah Blain and Molly Sanders, 8-1. Kotoglou and Linn Ronnberg were barely defeated by Hayley McIver and Paula Castillejos from Kansas State, 9-8.
Day two and three of the tournament will continue Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, competition times are still to be determined.
