THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team heads to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the Central Region Championships Oct. 24-28. The Utes will face off against Oklahoma State, BYU, Tulsa, New Mexico, Kansas State, Nebraska, Kansas, Boise State, Colorado, Southwest Missouri State, New Mexico State, Colorado State, Missouri and Iowa State. Match times will last all day.
THE UTES: The Utes previous competition was at the BYU Invitational. Utah battled against Boise State, BYU, Washington State, Colorado State and Weber State. Utah's own Ellen Svensson won the Flight 1 Backdraw Championship by defeating BYU's Dominique Reynolds in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7. This was a great victory for Svensson knowing that Reynolds was BYU's 2001 all-conference player and held a No. 21 ranking. Svensson also defeated Amanda Bartz from Colorado State to advance to the semifinals. Bartz is ranked No. 12 in the Central Region and No. 22 nationally.
COMING UP: The Utes will open the 2001 season by squaring off against instate rival Utah State. This match will be held Jan. 18 in the Eccles Tennis Center. The season opener will start at 5:00 p.m.
