SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah track and field team will travel to Provo, Utah, to participate in the Clarence Robison Invitational Apr. 20-22 at the BYU track complex. The meet will begin with the first half of the heptathlon and decathlon competition on Thursday and will conclude Saturday with the 4x400 relays.
The Utes were busy last weekend as the team participated among three different meets. "We had a hard week of production last week," says head coach Mike Jones. "We will limit most everyone's activity so they will only compete in one or two events instead of several. I think that we will see some improved performances but we want our best performances to occur at the conference championship."
Utah has several top ranked conference athletes. Most notable is senior Elisha Kekacs who is ranked third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.90), fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.24) and ninth in the 400 meters (57.98). Tracy Hamblin ranks 10th in the 400-meters (58.19) while Johanna Nielsen sits in eighth place in the 5,000 meters (17:08.95) and 6th in the 10,000 meters (35:36.50).
Erianne Allen (4,714), Shanae Nixon (4,550) and Kristy Slade (4,525) maintain the fourth, fifth and sixth spots, respectively, in the heptathlon. Nixon is also ranked fifth in the high jump (5' 5.0"). Freshman Alexandria Nash holds the sixth spot in the triple jump (37' 4.50").
Sophomore Audrey Kiser is in third place in the conference in the shot put (48' 8.25"), Mindy Wilder holds the fourth spot in the javelin (143' 0") and Chantel Goldsberry is fourth (180' 0") and Katherina Gallahar fifth (178' 4.0") in the hammer throw. The women's team has the second fastest 4x400 meter relay team in the conference (3:54.83).
The men's track team boasts Teren Jameson with the fastest 800 meter time in the conference (1:52.68). Jameson also contributes to Utah's dominance in the 5,000 meters as he holds the fifth fastest time (14:16.20) only to be outdone by teammates Chris Merkley, who holds the No. 1 ranking (13:55.37), and Travis Hildebrand, who is ranked third (14:12.18). Lion Gallegos holds the fourth spot in the 10,000 meters (31:59.04).
Utah has a bye week next week. They will compete in the ISU Twilight Invitational on May 4 in Pocatello, Idaho.
