SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - The University of Utah Men's Tennis Team fell 4-3 to visiting Brigham Young on Saturday Night. The match was close through every match as six of the thirteen singles games were decided in either a seventh set or a tie-breaker.
Utah jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point. Ashley Dyer and David Mercier convincingly defeated BYU's No. 1 combination of Gert Vilms and Damien Ward, 8-4. The other two matches would set the tone for the evening, as both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches were both decided by tie-breakers. Utah's Nik Yip and Kevin Zenger downed Nic Losee and Carlos Lozano, 9-8 while the Cougar's David White and Jeff Olsen upended David Laverty and Daniel Carlsson, 9-8.
In singles play, BYU won four out of six to take the match. The deciding match was at No. 3 where Trevor Ferguson and Lozano went into the third set. Lozano prevailed winning 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Cougars.
The loss drops Utah's record to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Utes' next match will be on March 11 versus Pepperdine, as they leave for a five game in eight day road trip. Utah will not return home again until March 30 when it will take on Weber State.
