Utah Men's Tennis Falls To Arizona, Arizona State

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Men's Tennis team completed an Arizona road-trip playing Arizona and Arizona State in back-to-back days. The Arizona-Arizona State road trip has traditionally been the first wing of Utah's perennial swing through PAC-10 opponents. Later this season, the Utes will go on to play California as well as Southern California.
On Feb. 7, Utah fell 6-1 to the host Wildcats. Freshman Daniel Carlsson pulled out the Utes only win in the match, defeating Caleb Marquardt in a three-set dual, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. Arizona's men improved to 3-2 overall, while Utah fell to 1-3.
On Feb. 8, Utah was swept by Arizona State, 7-0. The Sun Devils opened the dual by sweeping all three doubles matches for the first point. Arizona State's fourth ranked doubles tandem of Ed Carter and Alex Osterrieth started off the winning downing Utah's Ashley Dyer and David Mercier, 8-6. The victories continued for the Devils as they would drop only one set to the visiting Utes. With the loss, Utah dropped to 1-4 in dual play this year.
Utah's next match will be back in Salt Lake City on Feb. 12 against Air Force. This will be the Utes first ever game in the new Mountain West Conference. The match is at 3:00 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
