SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team fell to former WAC foe, SMU by a tight 4-5 score. To begin the heavily contested match, the Utes and Mustangs split the six singles matches to tie the overall score at three a piece. The No. 2 and No. 3 matches both went to third sets and were both won by SMU as Megan Russell downed Cassie Kasteler, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and Patricia Ubeda Diaz came back against Iriwi Kotoglou, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play the Mustangs took the No. 1 match and the Utes won No. 2. The overall score going into the No. 3 doubles match was 4-4. The match would eventually be decided by a tie-breaker as SMU's Sara Swaney and Ubeda Diaz outlasted Kotoglou and Frida Karelo winning the tie-breaker 7-5 and the match, 9-8.
"The bottom of the line-up displayed great depth for the Utes," said No. 1 singles and doubles player, Megan Dorny. Utah's top three singles were 0-3 while the bottom three went 3-0 against the Mustangs. "There was a huge momentum swing after the last singles match," said assistant coach Adam Eke.
"We could have easily been up 4-2 but it turned out to be 3-3. The doubles came down to a gut wrenching tie-breaker that the Utes lost, 7-5."
The loss drops the Utes' record to 3-5 overall. Utah's next match will be on Feb. 29 against instate rival Weber State at 5:00 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center. Admission is free.
