ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Jarrod Baxter ran through the rain for a career-high 135 yards on 29 carries and Stephen Persley blocked a Utah punt late in the fourth quarter to clinch New Mexico's 10-3 victory Saturday.
The win was the fifth in six games for New Mexico (5-4, 3-1) and moved the Lobos within one-half game of Mountain West Conference leader Colorado State, which played San Diego State later Saturday.
With Utah (2-6, 1-3) deep in its end of the field, Persley raced untouched up the middle to block the punt by Golden Wherman. New Mexico's Kirk Robbins recovered at the Utah 4. The Lobos couldn't get into the end zone and Vladimir Borombozin missed a 31-yard field goal attempt with 39 seconds left.
Utah's final chance ended when Walter Bernard intercepted freshman quarterback Lance Rice's pass with 3 seconds left.
In a meeting of the conference's two best defensive teams, New Mexico scored on its second possession - an 80-yard, 13-play drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Rudy Caamano to Jonathon Burrough with 3:42 left in the first quarter.
Utah got a 27-yard field goal by Ryan Kaneshiro with 12:31 left in the third quarter and Borombozin restored the seven-point lead with a 22-yard field goal with 2:38 left.
The Utes, who didn't get a first down until the 4:50 mark of the second quarter, lost two scoring opportunities in the final 2 1/2 minutes of the first half.
Utah drove to the New Mexico 19, but the Utes had to settle for a 35-yard field goal attempt by Kaneshiro which was wide right. It was the Utes' 13th missed field goal this year in 15 tries.
On its next possession, Utah got to the New Mexico 5, but Rice's pass was intercepted near the goal line by defensive end Brian Johnson with 22 seconds left in the half.
Rice, seeing his first action this season, took over from ineffective starter Darnell Arceneaux early in the second quarter and was 13-of-29 for 185 yards.
