San Diego, Calif. - The University of Utah women's volleyball team lost to the San Diego State Aztecs in five games, 7-15, 18-16, 15-11, 14-16, 17-19 at Peterson Gym in San Diego, Calif., on Sat., Oct. 21. Utah moves to 16-4 overall, 7-2 in the MWC. SDSU improves to 13-11 on the season, 5-4 in Mountain West Conference play.
Junior Lenka Urbanova and Freshman Kim Turner led Utah each with a career high 21 kills. Urbanova led the team with a career-high 21 digs, while teammate Adrianne Bradley-Drake added 18 digs. Katrena Ellett totaled 15 kills and 16 digs and freshman Jackie Morrill added 16 digs. Senior Brooke Barton had 14 digs in the match. Senior setter Lucie Turkova posted 15 kills and 76 assists, respectively. As a team Utah hit for .226 and added seven total team blocks.
For the Aztecs, Amy Hallquist totaled 25 kills and 19 digs. Monet Solberg racked up 20 kills and 14 digs, while Aspen McPartland had 16 kills and 22 digs. Melissa Wright posted 76 assists and 14 digs. San Diego Sate hit for .261 and added 21 total team blocks.
"It was a very competitive match and I thought San Diego State played well and I also thought we played well," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "They won by two points and both of us hit well above our hitting percentages. We felt like we laid it on the floor and it was a tough road match. Our number one passer went down last night and I'm not making excuses, but the reality is that we have two of our all-conference players from last year at about 70 percent right now. McKelle (Stilson) can go strong for one night and she can hardly move the next night. Geddes was just getting back in there, and then she went down last night with an ankle sprain. We've had so many injuries and different line-ups almost every single match, we just need to step back and regroup. I was very proud of our team though, for the way they competed."
