SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah will participate in the Western Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championship beginning Thursday May 20-22 in Fort Collins, Colo. The Utes have many athletes trying to defend their titles from a year ago.
Senior Jeff Simonich will compete in the 5,000 meter event which he won last year. Head Coach Mike Jones believes it will be a tight race.
"It will be a close one. Clyde Colenso from SMU has a one second faster time than Jeff right now so it will be interesting."
Travis Hildebrand, Chris Merkely, Dane Miller, Phil Stoddard, and Adam Stark will also compete in the 5,000 meters. Miller will also compete in the 10,000 meters.
Junior Larry Stanley will try to defend his title in the steeple chase and Thomas Fortune will throw the discus for Utah. Senior Amy Tidwell is competing in three events: the 200 and 400 meters and the long jump.
"Some of the events are scheduled too close for our situation," says Jones. "It is unfortunate that the 400 meter event and the long jump are so close together. Amy may not be able to recover in time to do well. But hopefully she can get her really good jumps in on the first or second try."
Alisha Kecaks will compete in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles and Chantel Goldsberry will participate in the hammer throw.
"Like in the indoor season, Chantel is our leading thrower," says Jones.
Christy Rose will throw the discus for Utah.
Senior Stacey Rhineer, the reigning indoor WAC champion in the triple jump, will try to match her performance in the outdoor season. Jones foresees Mindy Romig placing in the javelin throw and Elisha Kecaks finishing 7th or 8th in the heptathlon.
Overall, Utah has 20 women participating in the outdoor championship. A select few of Utah's athletes will compete in the NCAA outdoor track and field championship June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho.
