This Week: The Utes kick off their season this week by hosting their first dual match of the season. Utah will face Montana St. on Jan. 23 at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Previously: The Utes performed well in the preseason. They participated in four tournaments and had several individuals turn in impressive results. The highlight of the preseason was the play of doubles combo of Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue. At the Rolex Region VII Tournament, Coates and Rodrigue advanced through a field of 32 teams and won the doubles title. This win gave them a birth in the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Feb. 4-7.
Coates and Rodrigue posted a 19-3 record in the preseason and earned a No. 1 ranking in Region VII and No. 13 national ranking. Coates has also gained recognition for his singles play. Coates advanced to the finals of the Boise State and the Bulldog Classic Tournaments, and compiled a 16-4 preseason ranking. He is ranked fourth in Region VII and 86th nationally.
Looking Ahead: The Utes continue at home next week with matches against instate rivals Utah State and Weber State. Last year, Utah was 4-1 against instate competition. The Utah State match is on Jan. 29 and Weber St. is on Feb. 2. Both take place at the Eccles Tennis Center at 7:00 p.m.. Admission is free.
