The University of Utah men's tennis team took its first loss of the season Feb. 8, against Arizona. The Wildcats topped the Utes winning five of the six singles matches, as well as sweeping the three doubles matches. Utah is now 2-1 on the year, and will travel to Tempe, Ariz. to take on Arizona State.
Arizona began the day by sweeping all three doubles matches and continued their dominance in the singles competition, by winning five of six matches. Senior Adna Novo defeated Ben Coates at the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-4, while at the No. 3 position junior Pascal Salasca swept Trevor Ferguson 6-3, 6-4. Wildcat junior Michel Stopa topped Patrick Wallebring 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot and Utah's Nik Yip was overtaken by freshman Caleb Marqardt at the No. 5 position 6-1, 7-5. The No. 6 spot saw junior Alex Brown defeat Utah's Ryan Snow 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The Utes only win came at the No. 2 position where Utah's Ashley Dyer downed Jean-Noel LaCoste by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5). At the No. 1 doubles spot LaCoste and Salasca overtook Coates and Adam Eke 9-7, while at No. 2 Novo and Brian Jackson defeated Dyer and Ferguson 8-4. Utah's Wallebring and Yip lost to Arizona's Stopa and Brown at the No. 3 doubles spot 8-3.
