SALT LAKE CITY - After completing a successful cross country season, the Ute athletes will shift gears when the track and field indoor season begins Jan. 16 in Pocatello, Idaho, competing in the Snake River Open.
Only the women field a full team, however Head Coach Mike Jones will take the men along as well to all the invitationals.
"Our athletes are trying to reach two goals-- the conference standards so that they can participate in the conference championships and the qualifying mark to be invited to the national championships," says Jones.
Already a key loss on the women's team is junior Johanna Nielsen. "I thought Johanna was going to be a top competitor for us but she tore a tendon just before the (semester) break so she's probably through for the year," says Jones.
Jones expects senior Katherina Fatafehi and sophomore Chantel Goldsberry to be top contenders for Utah in the hammer throw, senior Stacey Rhineer in the triple jump and sophomore Mindy Rhomig in the javelin.
"For the women, those are going to be our outstanding athletes," says Jones. All-American and Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year Jeff Simonich will be competing in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters events for Utah. "Our goal is to get Jeff named All-American in two different events," says Jones. "It's going to be interesting to see if we can pull it off."
Jones also looks for junior Travis Hildebrand and senior Dane Miller to make an impact on the men's side. "Every weekend at an invitational the athletes will get a chance to prove how good they are," says Jones.
