The Utah track and field team heads to Ogden this weekend to compete in the Weber Sate Invitational. Head Coach Mike Jones was pleased with the individual performances last week at the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho. "We thought we saw some good things," said Jones. The Weber Sate Invitational, like the Snake River Open, will be a non-scoring meet. Only individual performances will be awarded.
The women had many strong performances for the inaugural meet of the season. "The women throwers had a field day for their first outing," said Jones. Most notable was Chantel Goldsberry placing seventh in the 20lb.weight category throwing 50'08.50". Heptathlete Amy Tidwell had a busy day placing fifth in the high jump clearing 5'4". She placed eighth (41.73) in the 300 meters, and ran a split on the mile relay. Senior Stacey Rhineer had a first place finish in the in the high jump (5'-8") and placed second in the triple jump at 38'09.75".
Senior distance runner and All-American Jeff Simonich won the men's 1,000 meter race by a nose. "With fifteen yards to go Jeff was in second place but surged ahead at the finish line to be declared the winner, "said Jones. This week at the Weber State Invite Simonich will compete in the mile event. A notable new member on the men's team is junior Chris Merkley. Merkley is a transfer student from Southern Utah University. He participated in last week's invitational finishing ninth (8:52.79) in the 3,000 meters. "He's an up and coming outstanding runner," said Jones.
