SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah men's tennis team leaves on its first road trip of the season, as it will take on Arizona on Feb. 8, and Arizona St. on Feb. 9. Arizona is 0-3 so far this year, and Arizona St. is 0-2. The Utes are 2-0 this season boasting two home wins over instate rivals. Utah defeated Utah St. on Jan. 29, 6-1, and Weber St. on Feb. 2, 7-0.
There are two newcomers to the Utah squad that played their first matches for the Utes this week. Ashley Dyer played at No. 3 singles against Utah St., and downed Ryan Burbidge 7-6, 6-1. Against Weber St. on Feb. 2, Dyer played at No. 2 singles and dominated 6-2, 6-4. Patrick Wallebring is another new addition to the Utah team. He played his first dual match as a Ute on Feb. 2. Wallebring defeated Geoff Nelson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
The Utes hosted their second match of the season on Feb. 2, against Weber St. The Utes swept singles play, lead by a 6-2, 7-5 victory of Ben Coates over Corrie Scheepers. Coates is the fourth ranked player in Region VII, and currently holds a No. 86 national Other singles victories in the match for the Utes included Ashley Dyer over Tim Rowse, 6-2, 6-4, Trevor Ferguson topping Randy Coahran, 6-1, 6-2, Ryan Snow defeating Derek DeLancey, 6-4, 6-0, Nik Yip downing Steve Peterson, 6-1, 6-2,and Patrick Wallebring beating Geoff Nelson, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Coates teamed with Dyer to down Scheepers and Rowse, 8-3, as Ferguson and Yip topped Peterson and MacLauris, 8-4. The closest match of the day was the clash between Snow and Wallebring from Utah, against DeLancey and Coahran from Weber State. The Utah duo squeaked out a 9-8 victory to complete the sweep for the Utes.
On Feb. 4, Two members of the Utah squad traveled to Dallas, Texas this weekend to compete in the National Rolex Indoor Championships. By winning the Region VII Rolex Championships, Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue qualified for one of the 16 seeds in the National Tournament. Coates and Rodrigue advanced to the second round, by defeating Harvard University's Scott Clark and Mark Passarella, 7-6, 7-5. In the second round, Coates and Rodrigue fell to the tournament's third seed from Illinois, Jeff Laski and Gavin Sontag, 4-6, 3-6. This is the first doubles team in over a decade to represent the Utes at the Rolex National Indoor Tournament.
Following the road trip to Arizona and Arizona St., the Utes return home for a home match against Idaho on Feb. 12, followed by BYU at home on Feb. 15.
