The Utes finished off the month of October with a very impressive showing at the ITA Region VII Tennis Tournament over Halloween weekend. There was a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles draw that played over five days. At least two matches Winners earned spots in February's National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in Dallas, Texas who will be announced later this week. The schools that sent competitors UNLV, New Mexico State, Idaho, Air Force, Nevada, Reno, BYU, New Mexico, Fresno State, Weber State, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Boise State, University of Denver, Idaho State, Utah State, UTEP, Montana State, Montana, Utah and San Diego State.
Utah's doubles tandem of Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue won their second straight tournament title. They were ranked fourth going into the tournament, and defeated second seeded Caballero and Dubey from New Mexico to win the title. Coates and Rodrigue won with relative ease, 6-3, 6-3. Their current national ranking of 32nd is sure to rise next month.
In the singles bracket, Coates advanced to the tournament semi-finals before falling to the tournament's first runner up, Mike Cheyne. This also marks the second time in a row that Coates has played in the tournament semi-finals. Other impressive performances were turned in by Philippe Rodrigue, who advanced to the third round, and Ryan Snow who won all three of his consolation matches.
The Region VII Tournament wraps up the pre-season for the Utes. Their first regular season match of the season will be on Jan. 23. They play host to Montana State at the Eccles Tennis Center. The match begins at 5:00, and entry is free.
