SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's Megan Payne outlasted teammate Linn Ronnberg in a hard fought 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, championship match at the University of Utah women's tennis invitational. Payne and Ronnberg were the top two seeds entering the tournament and they didn't disappoint in a tournament in which their Utes dominated Weber State and Utah State.
Junior Payne and freshman Ronnberg spearheaded the charge, in which Utah won all of its opening day matches, including upsets by freshman Hillaree Hawkins over WSU's number three seeded Veronica Reynosa, and senior Molly Sanderson upending the number seven seed, Sarah Lowe of USU.
Freshman Irini Kotoglou also advanced with the four other Utes into the quarterfinals. Weber's Dana Delancey joined Payne, Hawkins and Kotoglou in the semifinals. Payne moved into the final match by beating Delancey, 6-3, 6-0, while Ronnberg defeated Hawkins, 6-2, 6-3. The freshmen tandem of Hawkins-Ronnberg breezed to the doubles title with an 8-4 win over Reynosa and Delancey of WSU. The Ute pair had four solid performances enroute to the trophy, including an 8-4 semifinal win over Payne-Sanderson.
