SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams are 0-1, falling to Brigham Young in their first meets of the season.
Laura Beckstead swam to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle and Erin Blundell was first in the 200 fly. Britt Stubbendorff, Rebecca Gerber, Melissa Chamberlin and Jamie Wayman won the 400 free relay and Jill Comins was first in the 1-meter dive.
Finishing second for the Utes was Kim Lewis in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events and Heike Kutz in the 200 back.
"Erin Blundell swam with a shoulder injury but still managed to come together and swim well," Swim Director Dennis Tesch said.
On the men's side, Matt Chamberlain won the 200 IM and 200 fly. Johan Nystrom was first in the 50 free and swam to a second-place finish in the 100 free. Senior Jon Wright was second in the 1000 free and Chris Williams swam to a second-place finish in the 50 free.
"Matt Chamberlin kicked some butt, he is really prepared to do something incredible this season. Johan won the 50 with a time that is probably one of the top 20 in the country right now," Tesch said.
Kyle Kofoed, Wright, Chamberlain and Nystrom won the 400 free relay and Nick Smith won the 1-meter diving event.
"Overall, I think we're ahead of where I expected us to be. This was the best first meet opener we've swam in the last couple of years, but I still think there is room for improvement," Tesch said. "The team has a few more steps before we are ready to compete in the conference and I really think it's tough to lose to BYU."
