Dampier named Offensive Player of the Week, offensive and defensive lines honored by league
SALT LAKE CITY — Coming off a dominant season-opening victory over UCLA, the Utah football team was lauded with three Big 12 Conference weekly awards on Tuesday. Quarterback Devon Dampier was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while the Utes were also the recipient of both Big 12 Offensive Line of the Week and Defensive Line of the Week.
Â
Dampier went off playing inside the Rose Bowl, completing 21-of-25 passes to eight different receivers for 206 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 87 yards and a score on 16 carries. His 84% completion rate in Week 1 was the fourth-highest among FBS QBs and tied for the fourth-best in Utah single-game history. He became the first Utah signal caller to lead the team in passing and rushing yards since the 2023 season.
Â
The offensive line did not allow a sack all night and paved the way for 286 rushing yards—the most by a Big 12 squad to face an FBS opponent in Week 1. Utah went 14-of-17 on third down, converted on its lone fourth down try and scored on all six red-zone trips thanks to the stellar play in the trenches. The Utes returned all five starters from 2024's offensive line.
Â
Utah produced points on seven of its nine possessions against UCLA, punting just once. The other drive without a score saw the Utes line up in victory formation as the clock hit zeroes in the fourth quarter.
Â
Defensively, the guys up front were instrumental in Utah holding the Bruins to 220 total yards of offense. Defensive end Logan Fano had 2.0 TFL (1.0 sack) among his five total tackles, while also breaking up a pass. Fellow defensive end John Henry Daley also contributed 2.0 sacks as the Utes totaled 5.0 TFL as a team.
