FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The University of Utah dive's
Elias Petersen finished day one of the NCAA Swim and Dive Championship with a fourth-place finish and All-American status on the one-meter springboard in Federal Way, Wash. at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center on Thursday evening.
"Elias was on fire tonight," said head dive coach
Richard Marschner. "He got better with each dive and kept climbing the standings. It has been so much fun to see him develop and to see him really start to believe in himself and his ability. He's done the hard work and now he's really beginning to come into his own."
One-Meter King
- Junior Elias Petersen started his list off with an inward 2 ½ tuck, with the judges awarding him 60.45 points to start the meet.
- In the second round, the Malmo, Sweden native hit his reverse 1 ½ with a 2 ½ twist, accumulating 63 points.
- Adding 62.40 points to his score, Petersen then performed a lower degree of difficult dive, a front 2 ½ pike.
- Next came a back 2 ½ tuck, scoring 69 points and putting his overall total at 254.85.
- His best dive came in the fifth round, a reverse 2 ½ tuck that brought in 72 points.
- To top off his six-dive list, Petersen ended strong with a front 2 ½ with a full twist, commonly called a full-out, for 62.40 points.
- These six dives, brought his overall score to 389.25, solidifying his fourth-place finish and All-American status.
"This is the highest finish ever for a Utah diver and we still have more room to grow and get better," said Marschner, "I can't wait to see what he can do tomorrow."
Looking Ahead
Competition for continues tomorrow, with Petersen taking on the three-meter springboard at 1:15 M.T. in Federal Way, Wash.
