SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head men's basketball coach Alex Jensen continues to fill his staff, announcing the addition of Sacramento Kings Assistant GM Wes Wilcox as the newest general manager for the Runnin' Utes program.
"My meetings with Wes, coupled with his outstanding experience, made it clear to me that this decision was a no-brainer," said Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan. "I applaud Alex for identifying such a proven professional to help build the program as he envisions in this new era of college athletics, and I congratulate and welcome Wes and his family to the Runnin' Utes family."
Wilcox comes to Salt Lake City with over 20 years of experience in the NBA and has spent the last five seasons (2020-25) as an assistant general manager for the Kings.
"I'm thrilled to have Wes, his wife Larisha and their kids join our Runnin' Utes family here in Salt Lake City," said Jensen. "I couldn't think of a better person to trust with the general manager position for our basketball program. Wes has such a wealth of experience not only at various levels in the NBA level but in the front office role for multiple organizations as well. That experience along with the multiple positions he's had in all facets of the game will be critical as we move forward in this new frontier of college basketball."
Prior to his time in Sacramento, he spent eight seasons with the Atlanta Hawks (2012-20) in various roles. Wilcox started as an assistant GM for the Hawks from 2012-15 before being promoted to the General Manager (2015-17) position. He then transitioned to a special advisor role from 2017-20 before joining the Sacramento front office.
"My family and I are ecstatic to be joining the Runnin' Utes family and immerse ourselves in the Salt Lake Community," Wilcox said. "I want to thank Alex for entrusting me with such a critical position on his staff and incredibly humbled to work for a basketball program with so much history at the University of Utah. I understand how important this position is moving forward not only in the college athletics landscape but also for the future of Runnin' Utes basketball. I'm excited to hit the ground running right away to help bring Utah basketball back to national prominence and will work tirelessly to help make that happen. I would also like to thank Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan for this remarkable opportunity at such an important juncture in Runnin' Utes Basketball history."
Wilcox held several roles with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization (2003-12) before making the move to the front office with the Cavs. He started out as an advanced scout before transitioning to a college scout and pro personnel scout role. Wilcox would go on to serve as an assistant coach before being promoted to the front office as the Cavs' director of player personnel and served as the team's first-ever general manager for their NBA Developmental League (now NBA G League) team, the Canton Charge from 2010-12.
As the general manager, Wes was in charge of hiring Jensen as the Charge's head coach in 2011 – where he would end up being named the NBA D-League's Coach of the Year in his second season (2013).
The La Habra, Calif., native started his NBA career in 2001 serving as a scouting and video intern for the Miami Heat and then joined the New Orleans Pelicans (2002-03) as a video coordinator before signing on with the Cavaliers.
"I'd like to also send a special thank you to the Sacramento Kings organization and the best fans in the NBA," Wilcox mentioned. "So many incredible people to thank from our staff and players, but special thanks to Chairman, CEO & Governor Vivek Ranadive, GM Monte McNair, head coach Doug Christie, COO Matina Kolokotronis and President John Rinehart. All great friends who my family and I are forever grateful to have gotten to know."
