FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The University of Utah divers continue to dominate the West Coast, earning four more NCAA qualifications during the second day of the NCAA Zone E competition in Federal Way, Wash. on Tuesday afternoon.
On the second day of the NCAA Zone E Championships, two more Utes qualified for a spot at the NCAA Championship, with one more adding a second event. With the top 18 of each event moving on to finals, four Utah divers pushed on for a second list.
The scores at Zones are cumulative, meaning the divers carry their preliminary scores over and the finals totals are added on top. In today's event, the top six men in finals qualify for NCAAs, while the women were aiming for the top nine.
"After a good, not great day, yesterday, we came out with a quiet confidence and did exactly what we need to do," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Holly and Kat never wavered and stayed sharp throughout and it was a relatively stress-free day because they just didn't miss. Sydney closed out her career and I am supremely proud of her as she surpassed all expectations and was consistently a positive influence and teammate. She definitely affected her teammates' success and she is fully a part of the fact that we have four divers qualified for NCAAs."
On the Platform
- Junior Kathryn Grant set her third NCAA appearance in stone after her finals performance put her in fifth-place. Averaging 6.0 each round, her final dive put her on top, a back 2 ½ with a 1 ½ twist in the pike position that brought in 60.80 points.
- Senior Holly Waxman finished in sixth-place, successfully securing a spot at NCAAs on platform, her two lists adding up to 493.65. This finalizes Waxman's fourth appearance on the national stage in four years.
- With today's qualification, Waxman will be allowed to compete 3m at the National Championship. Although she did not make the top-eight in her six-dive springboard list, she secured a place in the top-12, effectively putting herself in the position to compete 3m at NCAAs if she qualified on another board. After she earned a place in today's finals session, the Leeds, England native was able to add 3m to her NCAA schedule.
- Freshman Callie Eaglestone finished her preliminary list with a score of 205.75 and senior Sydney Kowalski wasn't far behind with a score of 170.80.
- Grant, Waxman and Eaglestone just need to finish in the top-12 on the 1m, and they will be able to add another board to their NCAA schedule.
"Elias was steady again today and he was solidly in a qualifying spot throughout the sessions," said Marschner. "His consistency is becoming his biggest strength; his misses are still scoring in the 50s which will keep him in any meet. Jesco's 11
th-place finish means he now has a chance to qualify on all three events if he places in the top-seven tomorrow."
On the 3m
- Junior Elias Petersen qualified on his second board, this time placing sixth on 3m with a score of 753.05. Petersen averaged 64.39 points each round with his final dive being the outlier, a front 3 ½ pike for 69.75 points. This will be Petersen's third appearance on the national stage.
- Graduate Jesco Helling finished his three-meter event in 12th with a score of 675.85. Though Helling did not place within the top six on this event, he will have the opportunity to compete 1m and 3m at NCAAs if he places in the top-seven on platform because he was within the top 12 of both springboard events.
Looking Ahead
Competition for the divers wraps tomorrow, after the women take on the one meter and the men compete platform at 12:30 M.T. in Federal Way, Wash.
