SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Utes took on their second in-state foe of the season in Weber State on Thursday evening and picked up an 86-46 win over the Wildcats. Utah was led by a season-high performance from newcomer graduate transfer,
Mayé Touré, who had 22 points going 10-of-13 from the field.
GAME SUMMARY
Utah started the game hot as it jumped to a 10-0 lead early in the first quarter. Touré and Kennady McQueen both put up eight points in the first quarter to help out the Utes. Utah's defense only allowed four field goals in the first quarter that helped the Utes to a 25-9 lead going into the second quarter of play.
Utah's defense stayed locked in in the second quarter as the Utes only allowed Weber State to score five points from two field goals. The Utes outscored the Wildcats 22-5 in the second quarter to push out for a 47-14 lead going into halftime.
Despite a surge from the Wildcats in the second half, the Utes powered through to pull out the 86-46 victory.
LEADERS
Utah had four Utes score in double figures and were led by Mayé Touré's season-high 22 points. Touré went 10-of-13 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Kneepkens added 15 points for Utah including three made from deep.
Kennady McQueen put up 13 points also hitting three from beyond the arc.
Last but not least, Inês Vieira hit 12 points going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also had the game high eight assists to help out Utah's offensive efforts. There were four Utes who each pulled down five rebounds in
Reese Ross,
Gianna Kneepkens, Touré and
Samantha Crispe for the game high.
COMPARISON
Utah ended the game shooting 50.8 percent from the field while Weber State shot 38.0 percent. Utah knocked down 13 from beyond the arc, for the second game in a row, for 41.9 percent while the Wildcats hit just three from deep for 16.7 percent. Utah shot 87.5 percent from the free throw line going 7-of-8 while WSU shot 62.5 percent going 5-of-8.
Utah had 18 turnovers and forced Weber State into 26. The Utes dominated the boards with 40 while the Wildcats had 25. Utah had 23 assists to Weber State's seven. Utah's defensive efforts had 15 steals to Weber State's six.
NOTABLES
The Utes recorded an assist on 69.6 percent of all made field goals with 23 assists on 33 field goals made.
Kennady McQueen is one game closer to claiming the school record for most games played. She has currently played 119 games in her career as a Ute and now sits at No. 10 in Utah's all-time games played list. She needs just 20 more to hold the record outright.
Utah now has a 52-6 overall record against Weber State and is now on an 11-game winning streak in the series.
Utah is now 2-0 overall on the season.
