SALT LAKE CITY – Utah student-athletes continue to demonstrate the culture of excellence that has become a hallmark of the Utes' athletics programs, producing the fourth-highest semester grade-point average for the recently completed spring 2023 semester, and third-highest full-year GPA on record. Utah's student-athletes produced a semester GPA of 3.384 and a combined fall-spring GPA of 3.355 for 2022-23.
Â
Utah Athletics has now achieved 34 consecutive semesters with a departmental GPA of 3.00 or higher, and the past seven semesters have seen Utah's student-athletes post the seven best GPAs in department history. The fall 2022 GPA of 3.328 now ranks sixth all-time, and every team earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the spring of 2023.
Â
This unprecedented academic success has coincided with Utah's athletics programs putting in two of best years of competition in department history in 2021-22 and 2022-23, with 16 total conference championships, including regular season and tournaments or championship games.
Â
"When we talk about a culture of excellence, we apply that standard to every facet of our athletics department, and our student-athletes continue to raise the bar on those expectations," said Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "We are constantly inspired by their commitment to compete for championships, represent the university in the community, and most of all to excel in their academic endeavors and graduate. Every meaningful metric demonstrates their success, and we could not be prouder to celebrate their achievements."
Â
In 2022-23, Utah has claimed 10 total conference championships. This includes six Pac-12 championships—football (championship game), women's basketball (regular season), gymnastics (regular season and championship meet), men's tennis (regular season) and softball (tournament)—to go with skiing's RMISA regular season and championship meet victories and lacrosse's ASUN regular season and tournament titles.
Â
Utah's record-setting GPAs have carried over to one of the best departmental graduation rates in the nation. According to the most recent
NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR), released in December 2022, 93 percent of student-athletes at the U graduated within six years of enrolling. It was the fifth consecutive year that Utah's score has met or exceeded the 93-percent benchmark. Utah's 93 percent rate is tied for the fourth-highest figure among Power Five public institutions and is tied for the sixth-highest score among all institutions at the Power Five level.
