COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Utah's
Tony Chen won the 3m event on the first night of the Air Force Diving Invitational.
The sophomore was atop the leaderboard after the preliminary round, with
Luke McDivitt second and
Chase Hindmarsh seventh in a 20-person field. Chen also had the best score in the quarterfinals but slipped back to second in the semifinals. He was able to overtake BYU's Mickey Strauss in the finals for the win. McDivitt placed second in the quarterfinals and finished fourth overall. Hindmarsh eventually wound up in fifth place for the evening.
"This was a really fun format for a meet and I thought our guys did really well," head coach
Richard Marschner said. "Obviously, Tony winning was a highlight but Luke dived incredibly well to get to the semifinals and place fourth, while Chase registered his first ever NCAA Zone score with a great three meter list in the quarterfinals."
In the women's 1m field of 36, three divers were among the top six after preliminaries with
Lizzy DeCecco in third,
Lexi Mills sitting fourth and
Emma Ruchala slotted in sixth. Mills would move up the charts and make the finals, finishing third overall. Ruchala stayed in sixth while DeCecco slipped back to eighth.
Action continues with the men competing in the 1m and the women in the 3m
