SALT LAKE CITY - After making history with its first South Division title and a trip to the Pac-12 Championship game, the football team helped Utah athletics do the same in the classroom. Utah's 20 athletic teams—totaling 552 student-athletes (the largest athletic class in school history)—shattered the department fall semester record with a 3.302 cumulative grade point average. It was Utah's 25th-straight semester above the 3.0 threshold.
The record semester came on the heels of the best NCAA Graduation Success Rate (95%) by Utah's student-athletes.
"I am incredibly impressed with the commitment and drive our student-athletes showed in the classroom while also excelling competitively in the fall semester," said Utah Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan. "To achieve a 3.30 GPA across all sports is just a phenomenal accomplishment, as is our 95 percent graduation rate. Credit also goes to our academic staff, which has done a terrific job counseling, mentoring and instilling the importance of academic success in our student-athletics."
The football team was one of four to set new semester GPA marks, coming close to a 3.0 with its 2.925 GPA. Also setting new records were women's track and field (3.661), softball (3.474) and women's basketball (3.407).
Eighteen of Utah's 20 varsity teams achieved GPA's above a 3.0 with seven exceeding a 3.5 (gymnastics, men's skiing, women's skiing, indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country and women's tennis). Individually, 78 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA, 71 percent made the Honor Roll (3.0 minimum) and 42 percent made the Dean's List (3.5 or better).
Utah football, which led all Pac-12 teams by placing nine players on the All-Pac-12 team, also had six players make the first or second All-Pac-12 Academic teams. Leading receiver
Britain Covey was a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Volleyball advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2018 and produced its best academic fall semester ever with a 3.31 team GPA, as did cross country (3.684) and baseball (3.245).
Gymnastics moved its streak of semesters above a 3.0 GPA to 47 straight, followed by women's tennis (41), women's skiing (36), volleyball and men's skiing (21) and track and field (20). Soccer, which finished fourth in the conference in 2018 and paced the Pac-12 with three first-team All-Academic selections, achieved its 18th-straight semester with a team GPA above 3.0.
