SALT LAKE CITY – The final installment of the Deseret First Duel at Ute Field provided a classic with Utah Soccer rallying from a two-goal deficit before succumbing late to BYU, 3-2.
"I was very proud of the team's competitive spirit," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We never gave up and were able to level the game, so I am very proud with that. We learned some more things and now have to pick ourselves up for the next game."
Trailing by a pair with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Utah got on the board from a
Paola van der Veen rocket. The sophomore struck her second goal of the season with a laser to the right corner after a nice layoff from
Holly Daugirda.
In the 84
th minute,
Hailey Skolmoski equalized with a tumbling header. The Riverton native flipped head over heels but was able to get on the end of an
Ireland Dunn cross to pull the Utes level.
Unfortunately, BYU was able to get a winner just one minute later. For the second game in a row, a late goal did in the Utes. Cameron Tucker was able to dribble to the end line and her cross took a deflection, only to be chested in by Madie Gates.
"When we scored the first one," Manning said, "I had a feeling we would tie it up. We maintained our approach which led to the game getting stretched, becoming more wide open. We had the momentum and we rolled the dice, unfortunately, they were able to get a quick goal and that turned out to be the difference."
It was an evenly played first half with
Carly Nelson pulling of a pair of early saves and making five in the period. Dunn created the first chance for Utah and on the ensuing corner,
Tavia Leachman had a header held by Sabrina Davis.
The best opportunity for Utah occurred late as Davis tipped
Anna Escobedo's missile over the bar. Leachman continued to be all over the field in the first half, getting her head to the ball at both ends of the pitch. In the waning moments of the stanza, the junior defender collided with Davis during a scoring opportunity and the Cougar goalkeeper had to exit with an injury after a career-high five saves
BYU took the lead in the 52
nd minute as Elise Flake scored her third of the season. The junior peeled off her defender and got between two Utes to head home back across the frame of goal.
Rachel Lyman created havoc on the wings for the Cougars and assisted on her second goal in the 71
st minute. She served in a cross and Mikayla Colohan got inside a Utah defender at the near post for a 2-0 lead.
