Beach Volleyball Announces Additions to Coaching Staff

Whicker named head beach volleyball coach
SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah volleyball standout Brenda Whicker has been named the head beach volleyball coach for the Utes, director of volleyball Beth Launiere announced today. Whicker has already assumed head coaching duties and will look to lead the Utes in their second season as a beach volleyball program.

"Brenda has a vast background in beach volleyball as both a player and coach," said Launiere. "She has played the game for over 20 years, following a decorated indoor career at Utah from 1994 to 1996. She has won numerous local and regional beach tournaments and even qualified for the 2013 AVP tournament that was played in Salt Lake City.

"As one of the top players in the state and region, Brenda has also established herself as a leader in coaching beach volleyball, as well. Brenda has run beach volleyball camps and clinics for the last five years and is a respected expert in the game. I could not be more excited about having Brenda lead the Utah beach volleyball Program." Â Â

Whicker was an indoor volleyball player at Utah under Launiere from 1994-96. She is one of just five players that registered at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career while playing for the U. She ranks third all-time with 1,565 career kills and fourth overall with 1,313 career digs. She is the program's all-time leader with 161 career service aces.

In addition to having played in the AVP tournament back in 2013, Whicker also played a beach circuit from 2009-10 where she and her playing partner won an in-state tournament to qualify for a national event that was played in both San Francisco and Chicago. She won the Steamboat Tournament in Colorado back in 2013 and finished in third-place at the Motherlode Tournament on two separate occasions.

Along with Whicker being named head coach, Launiere also announced that Tyler Legerski has been named beach volleyball assistant coach. Legerski previously served as a volunteer assistant coach for the beach team last season and was the indoor squad's director of digital content this past fall.
