BOULDER, Colo. – From top to bottom, the University of Utah women's basketball program put together a team win against the Colorado Buffaloes, defeating them 76-61 in the Pac-12 opener. The Utes improved to 12-0 overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 play.
Through the eight players that saw action for the Utes tonight, all eight scored with six scoring five-or-more points and four reaching double digits. Of the four players that reached double-digits, three were freshmen, led by
Andrea Torres.
"I was really proud of our team because this is a really tough place to play," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "I think defensively we were really good. We contained them. They are a good team and they are going to score, but I thought we were locked in. We have a lot of respect for them. They are a good team, so this is a good win for us."
Torres was 7-of-11 from the floor that included going 4-of-7 from the three for a career-high 18 points.
Dre'Una Edwards added 14 points, two rebounds and two steals while
Dru Gylten poured in 10 points with four rebounds and five assists.
"This is not only a talented bunch, but it is also a group that has just really bought in," Roberts said. "These freshmen, and even
Niyah Becker. She came in and gave us quality minutes even if her line doesn't show it, but 10 valuable minutes. Dru played like Dru, Dre played like Dre and even though she got into foul trouble, Andrea came in and picked up where we left off."
Megan Huff also recorded her sixth double-double of the season, chipping in 13 points and 13 rebounds along with two assists and two steals.
It was a quarter of runs to start the game with eight ties and four lead changes in the first 10 minutes. The Utes held a six-point lead on a 9-0 run through half of the quarter, but Colorado countered with an 8-0 run of their own before
Kiana Moore drained a three to put the Utes up 21-18 heading into the second.
It was raining threes for the Utes in the second quarter with every made bucket for Utah coming from the arc. Six different players for the Utes hit at least one three in the second quarter, taking a 41-35 lead into halftime after going 8-of-11 from the arc in the first half (72-percent).
Utah jumped out to a 10-point lead early after going on a 6-0 run and holding Colorado scoreless for over three minutes of the third quarter. The Buffaloes tried to inch their way back, but Torres was hot from the three, hitting two key buckets from the arc down the stretch to keep the Utes at a safe distance.
The Utes entered the fourth quarter with a 56-49 lead and continued to shoot well, going 8-of-14 in the fourth (57-percent). Colorado cut the Utah lead to just nine points late in the game, but back-to-back threes that included a dagger from Huff pushed the Utes back up by double-digits, eventually sealing the win.
Utah returns to action when they host Arizona State (Jan. 4) and Arizona (Jan. 6) for its Pac-12 home openers.
