The NCAA announced the pairings and rotations for the 2014 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships today and Utah will compete in the evening semifinal on Friday, Apr. 18 in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Ala. In Utah's semifinal are host Alabama, Florida, UCLA, Nebraska and Penn State.
In the afternoon semifinal are Georgia, Stanford, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan and Illinois. The top three teams from each semifinal will qualify into the Super Six on Saturday, Apr. 19. Individual event finals will be conducted on Sunday, Apr. 20.
The Utes drew the same competitive rotation they had at regionals last Saturday, although they will finish, rather than start, on a bye. Utah opens on bars, followed by beam, bye, floor, vault and bye. The at-large all-arounder rotating with the Utes will be Katherine Grable of Arkansas.
Utah is making a record 39th-consecutive appearance at the national championships and is also the only program to qualify for all 33 NCAA Championships. The Utes have won 10 national championships. In their semifinal are three of the other four teams ever to win an NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship: Florida won its first title in 2013, and UCLA and Alabama have both won six NCAA Championships.
The Utes will meet UCLA for the fifth time this season and the fourth time in the last five meets in the NCAA semifinals. Utah is 3-1 against the Bruins this season, including wins at the Pac-12 and NCAA Regional championships. The Utes have not faced any of the other four teams in their semi this season.
The Utes will fly to Atlanta on Wednesday, Apr. 16 and bus to Birmingham. The team will practice in the BJCC on Thursday, Apr. 17 from 3:15-5:01 p.m.
