SALT LAKE CITY- Junior quarterback Travis Wilson threw for a season-high 297 yards, but the No. 20/22 University of Utah football team fell to No. 5 Oregon, 51-27, on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Utah (6-3, 3-3 Pac-12) produced a season-high 320 passing yards and 440 yards of total offense.
Wilson threw for a season-high 298 passing yards with 18 completions on 28 attempts and two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was his second 200-yard passing game this season. His previous season high was 265 against Idaho State. He moved into ninth on Utah's career passing yards list (4,520) and is now ninth in school history with 34 career touchdown passes.
Kaelin Clay and Devontae Booker became the first pair of Utes to have over 100 receiving yards in a game since Washington State in 2013.
Clay had a game-high 331 all-purpose yards, including a career-high 152 receiving yards on five receptions to go with seven kickoff returns for 179 yards.
Booker had eight receptions for a season-high 110 yards and turned in 68 rushing yards on 18 carries. Unfortunately, his streak of five straight 100-yard games was snapped but he did break the 1,000-yard rushing barrier for the season and now has 1,058 for the season.
Bubba Poole scored his second rushing touchdown of the season, an eight-yard score to cap Utah's first drive. He carried three times for 13 yards.
Tight end Westlee Tonga scored his second touchdown of the season on a 13-yard reception. It was his third career touchdown.
Junior Kendal Thompson made his second start of the season and rushed for 28 yards on five carries in addition to going 4-of-5 passing for 23 yards before leaving the game with an injury after two drives.
Nate Orchard had one sack, upping his season total to 13. He moved into a tie for third all-time for sacks in a season with John Frank (1999). The school record is 15 sacks. Orchard had eight tackles in the game along with his sixth career forced fumble in the third quarter (tied for fourth all-time at Utah).
Linebacker Jared Norris led Utah with 11 tackles, the fourth time this season (sixth career) that he has been in double-digit tackles. Safety Brian Blechen had his second career fumble recovery in the third quarter. He also had seven tackles.
Freshman defensive tackle Lowell Lotulelei registered two sacks totaling 13 yards.
Placekicker Andy Phillips went 2-for-3 with a 32 and 28-yard field goals and a 48-yard miss.
Punter Tom Hackett averaged 50.3 yards on three punts.
Clay started the game with a 41-yard kickoff return and the Utes converted a fourth-down for their initial first down. Thompson completed back-to-back passes to Tim Patrick and Clay for Utah's second first down and Thompson rushed for eight yards for another first down where an unnecessary roughness penalty set up an 8-yard rushing touchdown on an option pitch for Poole to give the Utes a 7-0 lead.
Lotulelei came up with consecutive sacks of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota on second and third down to push Oregon out of field goal range.
Linebacker Gionni Paul had a seven-yard sack on first down at Utah's 25 before Norris sniffed out a screen pass to limit the Ducks to a one-yard gain to force an Oregon fourth-down attempt where Eric Rowe tracked down Mariota on a scrambling attempt to stop the Ducks.
Wilson found Clay for a 78-yard post pattern, but fumbled at the 1-yard line before Oregon recovered and returned for a 100-yard touchdown to tie the game.
The Ducks then scored 17 more unanswered points to give them a 24-7 lead, but Wilson went 5-for-7 for 44 yards in the two-minute drill that led to a 32-yard field goal by Phillips that made the game 24-10 in favor of Oregon.
Lotulelei and Hunter Dimick came up with stops before Orchard forced a fumble that was recovered by Blechen. It was Orchard's sixth career fumble caused and Utah took over at the Oregon 16-yard line and converted with a Phillips' 28-yard field goal to cut the Utes' deficit to 11 (24-13).
The Ducks countered with a 31-yard field goal on their ensuing drive, but the Utes came up with a fourth-down stop on Oregon's next drive and were able to take possession at its own 31-yard line. Wilson then found Booker on a swing pass for 24 yards to push Utah into Oregon territory Wilson spun off a tackle to pick up a rushing first down before Booker took a screen pass 27 yards and dove to the pylon for a score to bring the Utes within seven, 27-20.
Oregon drove for a 42-yard field goal to push its lead back to 10, 30-20, but Utah responded with a 58-yard strike to Clay, again beating cover-two coverage on a post route, to bring the Utah offense to the Oregon 22-yard line. Wilson then found Tonga on a seam route for a 13-yard score to cut Utah's deficit to 30-27.
The Ducks came back with a touchdown of their own to regain a 10-point lead, 37-27. Booker connected with Wilson on another screen pass, this time for 28 yards, on Utah's following drive, which unfortunately ended with Phillips' 48-yard field goal attempt bouncing off the right upright.
Oregon (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) ended the game with two more touchdowns to set the final margin at 51-27.
The Utes continue their Pac-12 Conference schedule next Saturday at Stanford. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. PT with the live telecast on Pac-12 Networks.
